Top Prizes Awarded to Two of archawai‘i’s Finest
Assistant Professor Hongtao Zhou received First Place Novice for his “Energy Wood.” The Novice Category is for first-time entries in the Hawai‘i Woodshow™. Zhou’s piece is made entirely of reclaimed materials from School of Architecture woodshop's scrap pile. The Energy Wood was rejuvenated with the power of light and passion; design and craft added value to its uniqueness.
Landon Hamada’s ”Curved Chair,” made from Hawaiian ash and monkeypod, received two honors. For showcasing the best use of wood from under-utilized non-native trees while meeting exhibition criteria, he received the Spirit of the Show Award. He also received the Kent Award, which recognizes and honors the most promising first-time entrant age 18 and under. Hamada is in his final year of the Architecture Program.
The Hawai'i Forest Industry Association (HFIA) Hawai‘i’s Woodshow™ is the only statewide juried show. It was held on September 1-15, 2013, at the Honolulu Museum of Art School at Linekona. More than 20 show pieces were sold at the exhibition's conclusion and four pieces received recognition awards from Hawai'i State Foundation on Culture & the Arts.
Hawaii's Woodshow™ was created to promote an appreciation for the remarkable variety of Hawai'i-grown woods as well as for the talented woodworkers throughout our Islands. Artists were limited to Hawai'i-grown wood and were encouraged to use conservative techniques such as veneering to make the most effective use of wood in limited supply.
